DEVON CORTLAND
Though sharing the same father, legendary jazz bassist James Cortland, the brothers were raised separately by their mothers. Marcus by vocal coach Yvette Williams in the Bronx's Co-op City, and Devon by classical pianist Sheila Taylor in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant. Their musical education began early, with both mothers ensuring music remained central to their sons' lives.
The brothers' chance meeting at a Harlem talent show in their late teens revealed not only their blood connection but their musical chemistry. Despite their different vocal styles; Marcus with his powerful, church-influenced range and Devon with his smoother, jazz-infused approach, they blended seamlessly, creating harmonies that critics later hailed as "smooth as butter."
